Exploring Gampo Port

April 22, 2025 | Seoul, South Korea

During my kids’ Spring break we took a train to Ulsan for a mini vacation. We stayed at the Grand Mercure in 북구 (Buk-gu), which is a small town in Ulsan. On the second day of our trip we ventured to an even more remote place, called Gampo. Gampo is a fishing port town in Gyeongju-si about 45 minutes away from Buk-gu by taxi. For 점심 (lunch), we decided eat at Da Hae Restaurant where I tried a Korean dish called Whae Mu Chim (회무침). 회, pronounced “whae”, is the Korean word for raw fish or sashimi. The raw fish was sliced up over a bed of vegetables and topped with gochujang sauce and sesame seeds. I learned from some locals that 회무힘 is considered a “very Korean” dish. Based on a “회무침” Google search, it looks like the lovely owners of Da Hae may be plating their version of Whae Mu Chim more modernly, with more vegetables, and with less sauce. It was delicious and paired excellently with a cold 맥주 pronounced, “mek-ju” aka beer. We also ordered a boiling pot of 해물 순두부찌개 (sea food soft tofu stew), which is one of my favorite Korean dishes. Da Hae’s 순두부, pronounced “soon-du-bu", was very good! However, unlike Whae Mu Chim, one can get an authentic bowl of Korean seafood soft tofu stew in probably any metropolitan area of the US. Even Fayetteville, Arkansas has a few Korean restaurants that serve delicious soon-du-bu! Lastly, we also made several trips to the restaurant’s banchan (side dishes) buffet line. They served side dishes with seaweed, tofu, leafy greens, and of course, kimchi. The nice people running the restaurant also gave us a Gampo tourism book with our side dishes :). We read/translated the book while waiting for our main entrees. Note that many Korean restaurants in South Korea have a self-serve all-you-can-eat banchan station. Apparently, it is well known that Korean restaurants will never let their customers leave hungry, and Da Hae is no exception! After lunch we took a stroll through the Gampo public market, which sold a variety of items, but was heavy on the seaweed and seafood. Saw some very interesting looking fish! We also braved the strong winds that were occurring and walked out to the end of a pier where we got a closer look at a beautiful white lighthouse. To my readers - If the weather was better we would have walked more along the ocean in this port city. If you find yourself in Gampo, I do recommend Da Hae Restaurant, or at least finding a restaurant that serves 회 (raw fish)! As always 감사합니다 (thanks) for reading!
